“How I became a 6x National Bestseller!”

I have to share with you that I am asked about this at least twice a day. Many people email me, send inbox messages, and call me asking “how did you do it?” Typically I spend a few minutes giving them an overview because I honestly believe in supporting the dreams of others. I didn’t realize that publishing all of my books was such a “big deal” until others made it a big deal.

In 2012, I released my first book…My heart and soul were poured into that book, and it took me about 8 months to write it because I was so emotionally involved and I did it the “old school” way. I taught myself about self-publishing, marketing and learned a little about graphic design along the way. Although I did a lot of things wrong with the publication of this book, I did a lot of things right because I was able to get my book published!

Once I was bitten by the “author” bug, I knew that I wanted more and that this was my dream to continue writing and publishing books so I knew then that I would not become a “one hit wonder” in the author arena. I released 3 books in 2013, a curriculum and another book in 2014 and 2 additional books in 2015. By the time I released my latest book in the summer of 2015, I basically did it “with my eyes closed” and all but one of my books became National Bestsellers…5 of the 6 books hit the #1 spot in multiple categories. In fact, during one week in 2015 three of my books held the #1, #2 and #3 positions in the same category. Amazing right?

Well, not really.

Not really if you understand how to get your books to the coveted positions. It is intentional, strategic and analytical. You just have to know what you are doing and be confident about doing it.

One of the main things that I have noticed when others share their dreams of writing a book is that they suffer from at least from one of the following “ailments”: Fear, Confusion and Doubt.

They have a fear of failure. They have a fear of success. They have a fear of the unknown. They have a fear of what others are going to say. They have a fear of sharing. They have a fear of “life after” publishing a book.

They are confused. They are confused about the steps to write and publish a book. They are confused about where to start. They are confused about the publishing industry. They are confused about the marketing industry. They are confused about the process in its entirety.

They have doubts. They have doubts about if they can really write a book. They have doubts about if anyone will buy their book. They have doubts about the quality of their book because they are a “first-timer.” They have doubts about if it is the right thing to do.

Does this sound like you?

Well, what I have learned over the past few years is that if you remove the fear, confusion and doubt you can clear the path to begin your writing process. You will be able to learn the proven strategies and techniques necessary to write and publish your book and become a bestseller.

I’m not making this up either. This has been my life.

After writing the first book in 2012, I invested in training that focused on the most effective way to write books. I enrolled in courses that taught me how to market my books (this included choosing the right book cover design, social media platforms, google analytics, etc.). I also hired “experts” to work with me on an individualized basis to ensure that the next book was “on point.” That was the summer of 2013 when I released 3 books at the same time…I was able to do it because I was no longer was stagnated by any fear, confusion and doubt. I had learned exactly what it was I needed to know to continue writing and publishing.

If I were asked to give you some advice on what you should do to write and publish your book, here are the basics that I would say:

1. Diminish the fear, confusion and doubt. How?
a. Learn as much as you can about the steps it takes to write and publish.
b. Surround yourself with like-minded people. Join FB groups and mastermind classes with others who share your dream.
c. Hire your weakness. If you don’t know, enroll in webinars, courses, etc. so you can have a professional/expert teach you how to do it or do it for you (i.e., marketing, graphic design, etc.)

2. Create a “Backwards Design” model for your book. How?
a. This concept is a business concept that I find works great for aspiring writers because it forces you to “begin with the end in mind.” In other words, start with a book release date. Create that date and then work backward to determine what work needs to be completed by a specific date so you can release your book on that chosen date.

3. Develop a schedule. How?
a. This is closely related to the Backward Design model as described above. Take the time to realistically create a designated time and place where you can write. If it is only a page a day, then schedule the time that you can write a page a day. Think of it this way, after a month you will have 30 pages! In two months you will have 60 pages and depending on the type of book you want you could be finished!

4. Know the purpose of your book. How?
a. I find that people never start the book or never finish their books because they are spinning around in circles trying to figure out the next step. Well, if you know the purpose of your book then everything you write should be aligned with that purpose. If you successfully diminished the confusion in the beginning, then you should have the clarity you need.

5. Trust and Believe. How?
a. This is not scientifically based…Instead, this is spiritually based. Know that God has already ordered your steps. This book is what you are supposed to do because he has placed it on your mind, your heart and in your soul. It is on the path that he has created just for you. Trust and Believe in his Word.

There is soooooo much more that I can share with you about writing and publishing, but I just wanted to answer the most popular questions that I receive from people every day. Maybe this blog is exactly for you, or maybe it has nothing to do with you at all, but it was in my heart to share, to teach and to inspire someone out there who dreams of writing a book.
